Fish as a Barometer of Human Health

Fish as a Barometer of Human Health

As many provincial and state natural resource agencies struggle with systemic cuts to operating budgets and staff , one result is a severe reduction in aquatic field research and monitoring of fish and related environmental conditions in lakes and streams. When biologists are not able to maintain timely ‘on the water’ observations of factors affecting fish populations, conditions in ecosystems can change without being noticed and the potential result can affect more than fish – human health can be at risk.
