Horizon SC Special
Horizon SC Special - Edmund Tan
I was approached by Shimano Singapore to trial test and give comments of the Shimano Horizon SC Special XXX series. A dual purpose surfcasting rod that is capable of hitting huge distances as well as one that possesses fishing capability.
When I received the first prototype of the SC Special, I was already hitting huge distances with it ranging from 195metres to furthest distance of 215metres at a local field measured with an industrial measuring tape. All of the casts were executed with the pendulum style of casting. Therefore, I have concluded that it is suitable for our anglers and casters because I felt that it was relatively easy on my physical limitations to get that sort of distance.
And of course, one needs to put in a little more effort in practicing the stroke of the cast in order to make the rod perform. Onces, you achieve a relatively good practice of the stroke in a cast. The rod does it all for you and you just need to monitor the advances you could proceed on. The horizon is just ahead of you and it all starts with you. Pickup one of the Horizon SC Special and be amazed by how it is helping you to cast further than ever before with the least effort.

I came to a conclusion that the rod was suitable for long distance casting as it was user-friendly and yet has the power to propel the lead to the horizon. The rod has the lifting power to control a big fish off snags and has the ability to steer them away from any obstacle to prevent a cutoff from mainline. What’s more, the rod will launch big baits with a simple cast on a max 200gms sinker and it won’t bite you back at all.

During trial testing of the rod, I noted that it has an extremely stiff tip section. Probably stiffer than anything else in the market today. I thought that I wouldn’t have make it to managing a proper cast. Instead, my first few casts felt pretty easy and the results were stunting. I found that the stiff tip did not bite back on me because I could feel that the mid section have that little “give” as I was bringing the rod to its bend.

The first cast clocked a massive 198metres and subsequently it all went pass the 200metres mark. The greatest distance clocked for the day was a whopping 215metres at the open field.

There is a counter-balance weight at the butt section which I found was extremely useful as I have the option of lightening the rod with a simple twist of the rubber butt cap revealing a hidden counter balance weight system. This comes into handy as fatigue build up on a full day of casting practice.
I loves the extremely bright yellow rod blank as it sets the rod to be unique to itself as it is not common to see such bright colors around. The advantages of the illuminated blank allow me to spot any slightest movement while I am doing fishing. This also helped to alert me of any other sign of people trying to move the rod away too.

All in all, I would say that the rod is comparable, if not better to any one of the surfcasting rods that I can find from the market.
