Horizon Surf Game AX - Edmund Tan
I have been doing surf fishing for more than a decade since I first started. Over the years, I have used and swapped many surf fishing rods in order to find one that can satisfy my requirements.
In regards to this, the guys at Shimano came out with the Shimano Horizon Surf Game AX and had given me the privilege to test the multiplier and fixed spool version. The first impression of the rod which came out fresh from the box was a positive answer. A nice and sleek shaft which comprises of a full set of genuine Fuji Alconite guides and an adjustable reel seat. It also came with a reflective tip which is very good for night fishing and there was a machined groove which enables the rod to be taken apart easily.
Next, the highly dependable X-cross shrink tube which I really like as it adds onto a touch of customization and styling to the rod. What’s more, it also protects the rod from scratching against the rod stand or any other foreign object.
I have to give credits to the guys at Shimano for choosing quality Fuji Alconite guides for the rod because it prevents the fishing line from wearing prematurely as it boost great heat dissipation as well as the profile of its curvature sits your line comfortably when it is under load
I was getting excited to try out the new Shimano Horizon Surf Game AX as the taper of the rod suits my pre-requisition of a long range surf fishing rod. At the beach, I used a Shimano Torium 14 which I find is a good match with the rod for the first few cast. The first cast with a 125gms sinker clocked a massive distance of a 160metres on the line counter. In my opinion, at 160metres, the distance is more than sufficient to catch fish along the shoreline. Therefore, it is reasonably for me to say that it is good enough to cast a long way in search for fish along the surf.
As I parked the rod while waiting for a bite to register on its sensitive tip, I found out that it has the ability to differentiate between foreign object which often caught onto the line and bite detection. As I was looking at it, I knew the exact right time to strike a possible hookup which clearly registered on the tip. I was also very pleased with its performance given the fact that it is able to tell me what’s happening at the end of the line.

For all that matters in a pure surf fishing rod, I am pleased to conclude that the Shimano Horizon Surf Game AX makes a wonderful surf fishing rod.
